Founder’s story

We didn’t start Hamus Hosting with a big business plan.

We started mining ourselves at home.

Back in 2020, we had our own machines running. Loud, warm, and very present in daily life. But we were fascinated by Bitcoin and the technology behind it.

Mining felt like participating in something bigger.

It was not just an investment, it was being part of the network.

Our mining journey in 2021

Earning €40 and €50 per miner, per day.

Soon we found a hosting location in the Netherlands.

For the first miners, everything went well. They were running stable, earning between €40 and €50 per day. At that time, those numbers felt almost unreal. It gave us confidence. It felt like we were early and right.

To celebrate that first miner being online and running successfully, an early client invited us out for dinner. During that dinner, Wijnand said casually: “You guys should start a hosting location.”

It was said half joking, half serious.

When Christiaan got home that evening, he opened his laptop and did some quick math. The opportunity was clear. The demand was there. The margins could work. The next day he contacted a former colleague to put the plan in motion. That was the moment the idea shifted from talk to action.

That was the real beginning of our journey to start our own hosting company.

How our journey started with the best and worst timing

" So we decided to build our own hosting container. "

After we ordered more miners, the Dutch hosting location where our machines were placed started facing overheating problems. Instead of upgrading their infrastructure, they decided to remove miners. We were effectively kicked out.

At that point miners were earning strong daily revenues.

We wanted to send them to other hosting locations. But this period corresponded exactly with the China ban on crypto mining, in June 2021.

Global hosting capacity was sold out. Everyone was looking for space. There was simply nowhere to go.

So we decided to build our own hosting container.

Throughout the summer we designed and built it ourselves. It was hands-on, practical, and intense. We found a place next to a data center where we could connect and operate on spot pricing. It was around €0.15 per kWh.

At that moment, it made sense. The machines were running again. We were proud we had built something real. At this point we could enjoy the ride.

Until.

A few months later, electricity prices went through the roof in the Netherlands.

The energy crisis hit Europe hard. Prices surged to levels no one had anticipated. The operation quickly became unfeasible and we had to shut everything down. Another setback.

We started looking globally. We contacted over 50 hosting companies around the world. Calls, emails, negotiations.

Eventually we found a professional hosting company in Russia and decided to send all our miners there.

The first shipment ran into import issues and was sent back. More downtime. The Russian company paid for the second shipment, which showed commitment, but it meant another month of delay. Finally, the miners came online.

Until.

"Months of preparation disappeared in a moment."

Suddenly, hosting in Russia became a geopolitical risk. At the same time, electricity prices in Europe increased even more. Once again, uncertainty.

We kept looking for other hosting locations. Our ambition was clear: we wanted to operate our own facility, properly and professionally.

We found a multi-megawatt location in Norway. We secured investors. Everything was lined up. One week before we were supposed to close and start operations, the location was sold to another party. Months of preparation disappeared in a moment.

We regrouped and found another opportunity in Norway

This time together with a Norwegian party that already had a site operational. We invested, bought a location, and started the first deployment. On paper it looked strong. In practice it turned into a nightmare. The partner became completely dysfunctional, and operations suffered. It was a hard lesson in partnership selection.

And so we had to move again.

Another setback hits

the Russia–Ukraine war started a couple of months later

The new Location

Norway became our operational base

We found another location in Norway and shipped the miners there. This site proved stable, reliable and professional. We have now been operating there for over three years.

From there, things started to stabilize. Experience turned into structure. Lessons turned into strategy.

We found another Norwegian party to work with and are part of developing three additional hydro-powered sites in Norway, with heat reuse as a main focus. Mining generates heat. And instead of wasting it, we believe in integrating it into local energy systems.

We started to utilise heat-waste from the mining machines. Watch our promotional video below.

Looking back, our journey has not been linear

  • We started mining at home. Was stuck and couldn’t scale.
  • We were hosted in the Netherlands. Got kicked out.
  • We built our own container. Proud and empowering.
  • We shut down because of the energy crisis in Europe.
  • We shipped miners across borders.
  • We dealt with bans, war, overheating facilities and failed partnerships.
  • We moved again and again until we built stability.

Hamus Hosting wasn’t created because everything went smoothly

It was created because things didn’t work. And so we kept going, finding solutions and opportunities for ourselves and other miners like us.

Back then, the mining hosting industry was still a relatively small but growing sector. There was space for professionalization. There was demand for reliability. And most importantly, we deeply understood the pain points, because we had experienced them ourselves.

Mining is not just plug-and-play. It is energy-intensive. It is loud. Machines can easily reach temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius or more. It requires remote locations, stable power agreements, and cold climates to operate efficiently.

Therefore, Norway became our operational base. It was close enough to home. Clear regulatory frameworks. Cooler weather that naturally supports operations. And affordable renewable energy sources, like hydro- and wind power.

" Our ambition and vision is to build within the Bitcoin ecosystem for miners like ourselves "

We wanted to build the hosting company we wished we had back in 2020. Transparent communication. Predictable pricing. Secure infrastructure. Flexibility. No unnecessary complexity. Just solid operations and honest partnerships.

In many ways, our ideal client was ourselves. The version of us who needed reliable hosting during uncertain times. And who understands that better than someone who has lived through it?

Operating in Norway over the years has taught us resilience. The mining industry moves fast. Regulations evolve. Energy markets fluctuate. Bull and bear cycles come and go. But certain fundamentals remain constant: trust, transparency, and long-term thinking.

Some of our clients became more than clients. They became partners. Some became friends. We built not only infrastructure, but relationships rooted in shared belief in Bitcoin and its future.

And that belief remains unchanged.

Build with passion and with the people we trusts

We don’t see Bitcoin as a short-term trend. We see it as infrastructure. As part of a broader shift toward decentralized systems. That is why we continue to build within its ecosystem. Our next step is the development of our own marketplace for miners, a trusted environment where people can buy, sell, and scale within a network built on reliability.

We believe in building with people we trust. Sharing knowledge. Learning from mistakes. Improving continuously. Staying calm when markets are volatile. Thinking long term when others think short term.

Hamus Hosting was not born from perfect timing. It was born from challenges. From bans. From inflation. From energy crises. From setbacks after another and choosing not to give up.

From a few mining machines in 2020 to operating professional hosting infrastructure in Northern Europe, our journey has been shaped by conviction and persistence.

And we are still building.
